Baku Higher Oil School held an event to celebrate the 28th of May, the Republic Day.

Rector Elmar Gasimov briefed about the history of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first democratic republic in the Orient, established on May 28, 1918 adding that ADR was the logical outcome of the national freedom movement having a remarkable role in the history of Azerbaijan and contemporary statehood and became the fundamental of the perspective development of the XX century Orient in terms of the national statehood traditions. The Rector emphasized that although ADR could survive for only 23 months, it could play a significant role in the political life of a large geographical area and despite the fact that it emerged during tough period and in a very sensitive geopolitical location, ADR founded the basis of our history of statehood.

Mr. Gasimov mentioned that ADR implemented a number of essential reforms, underlying the importance of the women’s voting right and establishment of the Parliament and Baku State University (September 1, 1919), legal status of the Azerbaijani language and recruitment of the independent division of the first National Army on May 26, 1918.

Emphasizing the National Leader Haydar Aliyev’s quote “Today’s Azerbaijan is the successor of ADR established in 1918” the Rector noted that Haydar Aliyev focused on the importance of continuous promotion of the respect to ADR values and ideas.

He also underlined that the effective national and international policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev, a successor of the National Leader, were backed up by Haydar Aliyev’s ideas, and today’s dynamic development proved the defined strategy to be based on the national interests and will, while the national and international policy was grounded on the principles of independence and sovereignty.

“Azerbaijan’s economy constituting over 80% of the total economy of the South Caucasus is leading in the region and Azerbaijan is confidently moving towards prosperity”, said the Rector.

In conclusion, Mr. Gasimov noted that establishment of ADR founded the basis of the national ideology and its anniversary was annually celebrated in Azerbaijan, and extended his congratulations to the staff.
