Suleyman Suleymanzade, teacher of "Computer Studies and ICT" Department

"The government creates wide opportunities for young people"

Suleyman Suleymanzade, teacher of Computer Studies and ICT Department of Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS) was born in Baku in 1986. Graduating from secondary school No.200 he was admitted to Engineering System Technician Programme of the National Aviation Academy. During his studies at the Academy Suleyman participated in Programming Olympiads where he came first. He got his Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering from Dresden University of Technology and joined BHOS in 2014.

1. How did you decide to study Computer Engineering in Germany and to become a teacher?

- I was dreaming to become a Computer Engineer since my childhood. After getting my Bachelor’s Degree in Azerbaijan I went to Germany to continue my studies and came back to share my knowledge with young people studying here and decided to become a teacher, the goal which I achieved in BHOS.

2. What is the difference between the national and international education? What are the pros and cons?

- The main difference lies in the fact that in foreign higher educational institutions the students choose among the courses that are appropriate for their specialization and desire, while a student’s approach to studies is utterly different. A teacher does not make a student study, the students consider self-learning as an important aspect of their education. If a teacher gives the task requiring working on a specific Project or doing some research, students do it without any help of their teachers. They search for the necessary materials in the library, internet and other resources and do their best to solve the tasks they are given. None of the students are complaining that the subject has not been taught to them, because foreign teacher’s perception is that students have to learn the untaught materials themselves. I would say that these are both the pros and the cons of education abroad. I consider weaker interaction between the teacher and the student as a disadvantageous factor of international education system, while having a chance to be a part of international student community is a positive aspect which helps students to expand their mindset, language and communication skills. However, I have to say that the opportunities created in Azerbaijan for national students are not worse than those available abroad. Our government creates wide opportunities for young people to demonstrate their innovative abilities and creativity, while setting a platform for their application. For instance, there are unique chances for young people to progress holding leading and important public status, which includes various projects, TV programmes, competitions, etc. Even those who have studied abroad make use of these kind of opportunities that help them to get some experience, which sometimes is very difficult to get abroad.

3. Where did you work first?

- I started my professional life in Germany. I was responsible for electronic ticket sale system supply and installation of its operation principle.

4. How did join BHOS? What are our main responsibilities as a teacher of Computer Sciences and ICT Department and how can you manage fulfilling your responsibilities?

- I’ve heard some very positive comments about this school. I knew that English is a medium of instruction here and the curriculum is among the ones applied abroad. I’ve decided that I should share my experience gained in Germany specifically with the students of BHOS. I sent my CV and was invited to meet Rector Elmar Gasimov. Later, I had to make a presentation on Dependable Systems at the Scientific Council meeting which made a decision to appoint me a teacher at the relevant department. There are many responsibilities which lie on my shoulders as an employee of this department, which also include embarking upon extensive research.

5. What are the pros and cons of being a young teacher? What does teaching means for you?

- First of all, a teacher should be a responsible person and realize that his/her students are the future of the country. To my mind, being a teacher means formulating a potential future community. Thus, in order to create a positive interaction environment with students, a teacher should make his/her courses quite interesting and interactive.

6. As a member of the young generation, what are the main responsibilities while working with young people and faculty at a newly established higher school?

- I think it isn’t appropriate to discriminate between one’s responsibilities. A responsible person feels his/her obligations in everything. I just want to say that having a chance to work together with well-recognized scholars and young people is quite an essential, valuable and interesting aspect for me.
