BHOS administration, faculty and students, as well as Jahangir Aliyev, the Head of Azerbaijan Oil and Gas Industry Employees Trade Union Republic Committee, attended the meeting.

Opening the conference, Elmar Gasimov, the Rector of BHOS, talked about the importance and necessity of the establishment of the Trade Union Organization at the higher school. He mentioned the essence of trade union in every field of activity and noted that in Azerbaijan, the first trade union organization was established within the oil industry, because of the fact that the country’s oil industry dates back to many years. Emphasizing the hard work of the oil and gas employees, Mr. Gasimov reminded that since the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the first Trade Union had been established in Azerbaijan for protection of oil workers’ rights. He briefed about the Trade Union as an independent public and non-political association defending the interests, labour and social rights of the employees of production and non-production fields, retired employees and students adding that the establishment of BHOS Trade Union Committee consisting of the staff and students, as well as their involvement in the abovementioned activities would formulate a different approach to their public, social and cultural life. The rector called the faculty and students to give full support to the Trade Union Committee activities and congratulated all of them on this regard.

The Head of Azerbaijan Oil and Gas Industry Employees Trade Union Republic Committee Jahangir Aliyev spoke about the directions and activities of the institution. Underlying the importance of the protection of oil and gas employees’ rights for ensuring efficient business at SOCAR, he reminded the establishment of the first Trade Union in 1906 as a consequence of the strike which started with signature of the Fuel Oil Agreement between Baku workers and oil entrepreneurs back in 1904. He also appreciated the establishment of the Trade Union Committee at such a well-recognized higher school and wished BHOS success in its further activities.

At the end of the meeting, the participants of the Trade Union Organization Establishment Conference voted and elected the members of the Trade Union Committee. Habiba Sadigli, the Head of the Student Affairs Department was elected the Chair of the Committee.
