Madina Shukurlu, the Holder of the Presidential Scholarship (interview)

Madina Shukurlu, the Holder of the Presidential Scholarship:

"Every opportunity for becoming a professional engineer do exist at BHOS".

Madina Shukurlu was born in 1997 in Barda. She graduated from technical lyceum named after Zarifa Aliyeva in 2014. During her studies, she won the second place in Mathematics and Logic Olympiad (2009), the first place in Mathematics Olympiad (2010 and 2012), the second place in the brain ring (2011), and the first place in the contest jointly organized by Qafqaz University and Araz Preparatory Courses. Scoring a total of 690 points at the university admission examinations Madina was recruited in Process Automation Engineering programme and was awarded the Presidential Scholarship.

1. Madina, what can you say about the admission exams, what were your impressions prior to and after the exam?

- A couple of days before and on the day of the exams, I was a little bit exited. But when I saw the questions during the examinations, I realized that there were no reasons for that.

2. Were the results of your mock exams good? Did you ever believe that you would score a high point?

- I was studying at the 9th grade when I first took my mock examinations. And I scored 425 points. Then my target was to score over 600 points and I did it. A year later, my score constituted 621 points. And during the last year of studies, I participated regularly in mock examinations and used to get over 650 points, so my self-confidence increased gradually. During the admission tests both I and my family believed that the results would be quite high.

3. What should a prospective university student do in order to achieve over 600 points entrance score and how should one make the right choice of the relevant specialization?

- I would recommend every prospective student to identify the areas where he/she is weak and try to master those subjects. Besides, I believe that mock examinations facilitate objective evaluation of one’s potentials and help to be more focused on every step to be taken forward.

4. What was your reason for choosing this specialization and Baku Higher Oil School?

- I was always interested in advanced technologies development and management. That was the main reason. The facts that I first learned about BHOS when studying at the 9th grade, the opportunities created for students, the programmes taught in English, one year foundation programme in language training and ICT skills development, as well as the chances of being sent to study abroad, increased my interest in this school. I believe that all these factors are among the most important ones which support you in becoming a professional engineer and I think all these opportunities do exist at BHOS.

5. People mostly think that technical domains and engineering are for males. What do you think about that?

- I do not agree with that in terms of my major, because process automation is the domain which requires no physical force, but intelligence. Anyone with spacious intellect can succeed in this field. For instance, some 30% of the students studying at BHOS are ladies.

6. What are your recommendations to the prospective university students wishing to study at BHOS? How do you find the education here?

- Being a BHOS student is quite demanding. Everyone planning to be admitted to this higher school should work hard and realize that studying here is even more challenging than just being recruited to one of its programmes.

7. What are your future plans?

- I wish to become a professional engineer and to work for SOCAR being responsible for ensuring the technological security using automated management and control systems.

8. How do you spend you leisure

- I prefer reading books and often playing the piano. I think doing some music is the best way of overcoming the post-studies fatigue.
