Round table to mark 27 Anniversary of 20 January Tragedy held at BHOS

Round table to commemorate 27th anniversary of 20th January bloody tragedy was conducted at Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS). The event participants held a moment of silence to honor glorious memory of the victims of January tragedy. Opening the meeting, BHOS Vice-Rector for Training, Science and International Relations Ramiz Humbatov emphasized that events of 20 January became one of the most important steps on Azerbaijan’s way to the national freedom. He also said that the Soviet Army performed violent atrocity against civilians in Baku. Ramiz Humbatov noted that Black January events in Baku would be imprinted in the memory of the Azerbaijani people forever. Struggling for national freedom and territorial integrity of their homeland, glorious sons and daughters of Azerbaijan sacrificed their lives for their homeland and wrote a bright page in the country’s history.

 

Associate Professor of BHOS’ English Language and HD Centre Alamdar Shahverdiyev told about the history of the tragic events in January 1990 and said that this tragedy occupied an important place in the history of Azerbaijan. He emphasized that the first historical and political assessment of the event was given by the national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev. Alamdar Shahverdiev said that 20 January is also day of national pride and glory when Azerbaijani people rose for the freedom and integrity of their country.

 

Speaking at the round table, Dean of BHOS Lifelong Learning Department Rena Mustafayeva and professor of Petroleum Engineering Faculty Arif Mammadzada shared their memories about Bloody January. At the end, a short documentary highlighting events of the 20th January tragedy was demonstrated.
