BHOS holds an event to mark the new academic year
Today, Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS) held an event on the occasion of the new academic year. Before the start of the event, the attendees, Rovnaq Abdullayev, the President of SOCAR and Member of Parliament, Maleyka Abbaszadeh, Chairwoman of the State Students Admission Commission of Azerbaijan Republic, BHOS teaching staff and students, and other government officials, honored the memory of the National Leader Haydar Aliyev by laying flowers at his bust at BHOS.
Elmar Gasimov, the Rector of BHOS, made an opening speech expressing his gratitude to the guests on behalf of BHOS staff for attending the event. He extended congratulations to the freshmen who had scored high points in 2014/2015 academic year and the other BHOS students, who had successfully passed the exams on the occasion of the beginning of the new academic year. Speaking about the achievements made by BHOS in a short period of time, as well as its prospects and perspectives, Mr. Gasimov emphasized the fact that despite its three year’s activity, Baku Higher Oil School had already become an absolute leader in high school rankings. Disclosing the results of admission scores for all specialties from the first year to the present time, Mr. Gasimov emphasized the fact that the average score for admission to BHOS was 631 points for the academic years of 2012/2013, 656 points for 2013/2014 and 668 for 2014/2015 and the latter is the highest indicator in Azerbaijan. He also noted that the increasing score indicators are also expressed in the growing number of Presidential Scholarship holders awarded based on high entrance scores as per the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev. In the academic years of 2012/2013, eleven Presidential Scholarship holders were admitted to BHOS, while this number reached up to seventeen students in 2014/2015.
Speaking about the growing scope of the reforms and activities carried out in Azerbaijan every year in compliance with international standards, Mr. Gasimov attached a great importance to strengthening human capacity in line with modern standards. He added that President Ilham Aliyev’s motto stating: "We must turn oil capital into human capital", was a perfect example to be followed by BHOS.
SOCAR President Rovnag Abdullayev congratulated the teaching staff, students and parents on the Day of Knowledge. Emphasizing the importance of the Decree signed by President Aliyev on November 29, 2011, he said that in a short period of time BHOS had made great achievements taking important steps to building up its infrastructure and formulating human resources. He also mentioned that as a result of increasing construction and reconstruction work, Azerbaijan had prospered to become a leading country in the region, adding that the primary goal of establishing BHOS was to train highly skilled personnel with extensive knowledge of international best practice in order to improve welfare of the Azerbaijani nation which played a key role in regional development and energy security in Europe.
Maleyka Abbaszadeh, Chairwoman of the State Students Admission Commission of Azerbaijan Republic, congratulated the students on scoring high points in the examinations and being admitted to BHOS. She said that despite being a newly established institution, BHOS had become a leader in university rankings with regard to several performance indicators and made outstanding achievements. The minimum admission score for BHOS constituted 673 points for Process Automation Engineering, 660 points for Petroleum Engineering and 648 points for Chemical Engineering programmes in 2014/ 2015 academic year. Average admission scores for these programmes were 684, 671 and 657 points correspondingly, and the total score was 668. According to her, that was not only a great achievement but also a huge responsibility. Wishing the students success in their future activities, she expressed her hope that the students would use all the opportunities created by the Azerbaijani government to acquire relevant knowledge and skills in order to contribute to the dynamic growth of the country.
John Ford, the professor of the Institute of Petroleum Engineering of Herriot-Watt University expressed his satisfaction with the establishment of mutual cooperation in the training of specialists and appreciated the existing infrastructure, staff resources and student population. He mentioned that the opportunities and conditions created at BHOS as well as its staff resources were on a par with those of international high schools. Drawing a parallel between the grades scored by BHOS students and those by Herriot-Watt students in the same discipline, he said that BHOS students had achieved better results although both of the schools used the same curricula and textbooks. That was a perfect example of the great care provided by BHOS management to education, teaching quality and discipline.
Other attendees, Mr. Araz Sharifov, the father of two brothers, Ibrahim Safarov, the Presidential Scholarship holder, who scored 690 points to be admitted to BHOS “Chemical Engineering” Department and Ayaz Sharifov, the Presidential Scholarship holder, who scored 687 points to be admitted to BHOS “Oil and Gas Engineering” Department, Kamran Aliyev, the third-year student of BHOS, Emilya Mammadova, the second year student of BHOS and Sltun Ibrahimov, who scored 700 points to be admitted to BHOS “Process Automation Engineering” Department, expressed their gratitude to Mr. Ilham Aliyev for the opportunities created in the sphere of education and successful educational reforms. The attending students thanked BHOS management for the opportunities and conditions created for them and said that they were pleased to be studying at BHOS.
At the end of the event, Mr. Gasimov and the attending guests presented the Herriot-Watt University Student Membership Cards to the students who had successfully completed the first academic year at BHOS, and BHOS Student Membership Cards to the freshmen who were admitted to BHOS in the academic years of 2014/2015.
