Baku Higher Oil School of SOCAR honors memory of victims of Khojaly genocide

A commemorative event dedicated to the 31st anniversary of the Khojaly genocide has been held at SOCAR's Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS).

First, the staff and students of the university visited the "Mother’s Cry" monument.

The commemoration event, held at Baku Higher Oil School, started with a minute of silence for victims of the Khojaly tragedy.

Opening the event with a keynote speech, BHOS Rector Elmar Gasimov said that the Khojaly genocide perpetrated by Armenian military formations against the civilian population in the city of Khojaly on the night of February 25-26, 1992, was the most heinous and cruel crime committed against humanity, which have left indelible traces in the blood memory of the Azerbaijani people. The rector noted that after the national leader Heydar Aliyev returned to power, he gave a political and legal assessment to this tragedy, and that at the initiative of Heydar Aliyev, on February 24, 1994, the Azerbaijani Parliament adopted resolution “On the Day of Khojaly Genocide”.

Speaking about to the steps taken towards informing the world community about the Khojaly genocide, Elmar Gasimov  said that Justice to Khojaly campaigns were held at the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, numerous commemorative events dedicated to the Khojaly tragedy were held in various countries, and extensive propaganda and agitation work was carried out, as a result of which the Khojaly genocide have been recognized by a number of countries and international organizations, the international political assessment  has been given to the tragedy, and important documents on the Khojaly genocide have been adopted. 

 “All these steps have led to the ideological victory of Azerbaijan. The atrocities committed by the Armenians could not break the determination of our people to fight, and the Azerbaijani Army under the leadership of the President of the Republic of AzerbaijanSupreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev took revenge for the victims of the Khojaly genocide by winning a glorious Victory in the Patriotic War.”

Addressing the students, the rector said that it is the duty of every Azerbaijani to convey the truth about the genocide to the world community.

“Young people must never forget the Khojaly genocide, which is one of the most terrible pages in the history of Azerbaijan, and they should study our history in depth,” Elmar Gasimov stressed.

Speaking at the event, Associate Professor of BHOS Centre of English Language and Humanitarian Disciplines, PhD in History Alemdar Shahverdiyev and Historical Research Specialist Parvin Ahanchi gave information about the historical details of the genocide. They also answered the students' questions.
