Psychologist of Baku Higher Oil School: ‘We should help young people to investigate the root cause of difficulties experienced by them’

“One of the most important characteristics found in the youth of the modern era is their broad outlook. Of course, the role of various means of communication in this development is irreplaceable. However, in some cases, young people fail to use these communication methods correctly.”

This opinion was expressed by Firuza Mustafayeva, a psychologist at Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS). She said that the misuse of communication tools often lead to addiction problems.

“Not being able to apportion time correctly, unscheduled and counterproductive activity in social networks hinders their development in real life and leads to the creation of some gaps in the formation of their personality. Negative characteristic features such as lack of self-confidence, shyness, asociality, intolerance to stress begin to form in young people.”

Firuza Mustafayeva emphasized that higher level of asociality is observed among high-scoring students. The psychologist said that this causes serious problems for them during the years of their studies at the university.

“Because they spend most of their time only studying and acquiring a certain qualification, they seem to face difficulties in adapting to society. Because they cannot socialize, these students experience difficulties in developing friendships with their peers and expressing themselves as they are. Another phenomenon observed in high-scoring students is the pursuit of perfection. High-scoring students are often perfectionists. Although perfectionism brings us success in some cases, it often causes complications such as brain overloading and psychological burnout. Expectations set without taking into account the potential can create a feeling of disappointment in students and demotivate them in their studies”.

The BHOS psychologist said that these problems can be solved only with the help of people around.

“To overcome these difficulties, young people should always be supported by those closest to them - family members, relatives, friends and acquaintances. We should be with them emotionally and help them investigate the root cause of difficulties experienced by them. Young people should know that when they succeed and when they fail, the people they care about will always accept them, and, especially, that the love for them will not turn into conditional love under any circumstances.”
