Those who led the Istiglal team of Baku Higher Oil School to victory

The Istiglal team of Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS) is one of the winning teams at Teknofest, Turkey's largest airspace and technology festival, which was held for the first time in Baku. The team won first place in the "Cansat Model Satellite" competition. Istiglal consists of 5 students majoring in Process Automation Engineering.

Below is an interview with the members of this team. 

• Can you tell us about the specificity of your project, which was awarded first place at Teknofest?

Ramil Shukurov is a graduate of Baku Higher Oil School. He currently works as a teacher at BHOS.

- At Teknofest, we participated in the "Amateur Satellite Modeling" competition. The competition participants were required to develop a satellite model with specific dimensions, interior, and design. When landing, it had to transmit information about the gases in the air, battery consumption, distance by telemetry directly to the database. It was possible to see the information received from the central system through the mobile application we developed. This was our advantage, since there were teams that just wrote the information in memory. One of the reasons for the success of our project was that it fully met the minimum and bonus requirements and the satellite model had an advantageous design.

- How was the Istiglal team created?

- I had always wanted to participate in the "Cansat Model Satellite" contest. However, it was necessary to create a team, because the space industry includes many areas, such as engineering, mechanics, electronics, programming. We created such a team because I knew who of my teammates was more capable in a particular field.

 - What did Teknofest bring you?

Ramil Shukurov:

- I saw that the enthusiasm and interest of the Azerbaijani youth in the field of satellites has increased, they have innovative thinking in the field of technology, and this field is developing. We learned what is happening in the world in a competitive environment with other teams, what trends exist and what is planned to be done in the future. I hope that we will contribute to this field and local engineers will be nurtured for this field. We are negotiating with Azercosmos, and our goal is to improve our project and participate in a global amateur satellite modeling competition.

Fuad Mammadzade:

- Being a team leader as a captain, drawing successful plans, including those related to       labor division, has given me a great experience. We had set ourselves up for victory.  As the completion progressed, we got a little worried because our opponents were strong. The mobile and web app component of our satellite model was very successful. We thank our esteemed rector Elmar Gasimov and the whole BHOS family for the conditions created for us. We were very proud to meet the two leaders of the Turkic world and the Nobel laureate, shake their hands and receive awards from them. My interest in the space industry has grown, and I have set a goal to strengthen my knowledge in this field and become a good specialist.

- All my life I have believed that a victory comes through persistent struggle. That is why we worked very hard. It was a great and proud feeling to stand on the same stage with our President Ilham Aliyev, President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Nobel Laureate Aziz Sanjar during the awards ceremony. After this festival, my interest in the space industry increased. I want to strengthen my knowledge in this field and become an expert.

Geybulla Aliverdiyev - a member of the Istiglal team

-   Teknofest taught us to apply the knowledge that we had gained at the university for 4 years on real projects. Besides the joy at our victory, it was a great feeling to receive an award from two Presidents and a Nobel laureate. It was one of our dreams to meet the Nobel laureate. This competition has further increased our enthusiasm for the space industry. We intend to continue developing projects that will be even more beneficial for humanity and our country.

- During the festival, I got acquainted with new projects, gained new knowledge, discovered new skills, learned my strengths and weaknesses. In the future, those who participate in this competition will contact us for help and advice. Therefore, I need to strengthen my work, knowledge and skills, gain deep knowledge so that I can answer everyone's question. Being the first increased my self-confidence. In future, I will have to be first in the competitions I will participate in.

Kanan Bagaliyev - a member of the Istiglal team

- Currently, large-scale model satellites are seriously damaging the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to make these model satellites as small as ours. This was tested with our project. The main goal of our project is to make a better contribution to the environment. Thanks to this competition, I have learned to develop mobile applications. We must constantly move forward, develop, learn new technologies in order to maintain our global championship title.
