Baku Higher Oil School commemorates martyrs of 20 January Tragedy
A commemorative event dedicated to the 32nd anniversary of the 20 January Tragedy has been held at Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS). The event began with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan.
Speaking about the bloody tragedy, BHOS Rector Elmar Gasimov stressed that the names of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence, sovereignty and freedom of our country will forever be engraved in our history and the memory of our people.
“The 20 January events are a chronicle of national unity and determination. The tragedy that befell our people was first given a legal assessment thanks to the political will of National Leader Heydar Aliyev. The bloody crime committed by the Soviet army accelerated the collapse of the USSR. After this tragedy, the independence movement became more widespread in Azerbaijan. During the 20 January events, the people of Azerbaijan demonstrated true unity and heroism. We also witnessed the national unity and perseverance of the Azerbaijani people during the 44-day Patriotic War. As a result of this war, we liberated our lands, which had been occupied for almost 30 years, and won a historic victory. If in 1990, the people of Azerbaijan demonstrated national unity within the Soviet Union, thirty years later, the people of independent Azerbaijan displayed solidarity with the will of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev to liberate the occupied lands.”
The rector advised the youth not to forget the tragedies that befell our people and to take an active part in informing the international community about them. He stressed the importance of teaching our history at Baku Higher Oil School and educating students in the national and patriotic spirit.
